( dpa ) - Two journalists from Tanzanian daily Mwanahalisi were seriously wounded after unknown assailants attacked them with machetes and acid, the Media Institute for Southern Africa said Tuesday.

The two were hospitalized after the attack Saturday with serious injuries including cuts and chemical burns, the institute reported, with one having been blinded by the acid.

The Swahili-language newspaper has in the past spotlighted politicians accused of corruption and of misappropriating public funds.

One of the assaulted journalists, Saed Kubanea, had previously said he was subjected to numerous death threats.

Tanzanian President Jakaya Kikwete, who has also been accused of corruption by Mwanahalisi, condemned the attack as "despicable." Journalists' unions in the east African country called on the government to investigate the incident.
