The U.S. government will provide $425,000 in assistance to the Kazakh police to combat illegal drug trafficking, the U.S. Embassy in Astana told Trend today.

"The government allocated $425,000 for further cooperation in combating illegal drug trafficking, reducing the demand for drugs, combating human trafficking and strengthening border security," the embassy said.

The funds will be allocated under a protocol on a memorandum of understanding signed earlier by the U.S. and Kazakh governments on combating drug trafficking.

"The protocol was signed on Sept. 7 in Astana by U.S. Ambassador Richard Hoagland and Kazakh International Affairs Minister Serik Baimagambetov," the embassy said.
