The United Nations has called on the Nepalese government to respect a court order on equal rights for sexual minorities, according to a statement released on Thursday, DPA reports.

Nepal has seen a number of protests this week by gays demanding the government speed up implementation of a 2007 Supreme Court ruling that they should be granted citizenship.

The Office of the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights in Nepal (OHCHR-Nepal) reiterated its concern at "the structured forms of discrimination and stigmatization" faced by sexual minorities.

On Tuesday, police briefly detained Nepal's first openly gay lawmaker, Sunil Babu Pant, along with 70 others for staging demonstrations in a prohibited area.
