Three Turkish soldiers were killed and two injured in a bomb attack in the south east of the country, broadcaster CNN-Turk reported Tuesday.

Unknown assailants detonated the mine as the soldiers were patrolling an area of land in Hakkari province close to the Iraqi border, DPA reported.

No one has yet laid claim to the ambush.

The Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK) has carried out similar attacks against the Turkish military in the same area. The PKK is designated a terrorist organization by the Turkish government, the European Union and the United States.

The group has been fighting for more autonomy or an independent Kurdistan since the 1980s.

At least 35,000 people have so far been killed in the conflict, according to the Turkish army.
