Azerbaijan has been selected the vice-chairman of the working group for the Asian-Pacific Information Superhighway - APIS, a source on the telecommunications market of Azerbaijan told Trend September 1.

The election of chairperson countries took place in South Korea within the framework of the first meeting of the Working Group on the APIS, according to the source.

Following the last election, Azerbaijan (TASIM project), Korea and China were selected vice-chairmen countries of the APIS working group.

Pakistan will be chairing in the working group.

The APIS working group was established in order to develop guidelines and standards, as well as a master plan covering both program and technical aspects of the Asia-Pacific Information Superhighway.

The working group includes representatives of the ministries of communication and information technologies, regulators of the telecommunications industry, international and regional organizations, international financial institutions, as well as the private sector representatives.

Azerbaijan in the APIS working group will be introduced by the Trans-Eurasian Information Super Highway (TASIM) project, which was marked by UNESCAP (United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific) as a key example of regional cross-border terrestrial communication.

The above statement was reflected in the conclusion and recommendations on the development of AIS and posted on the official website of UNESCAP.

The document said that the TASIM project is intended not only to connect Europe and Asia, but also to become one of the key parts of the AIS. UNESCAP and the TASIM secretariat were in favor of mutual support of the both projects and expressed their willingness to continue working together to create an information and communication space in Asia and the Pacific region.

At present, the TASIM project includes such countries as Russia (Rostelecom), Kazakhstan (KazTransCom), Turkey (TurkTelecom), China (China Telecom), and Azerbaijan (represented by the Center for International Relations and Calculations of the Ministry of Communications and High Technologies).

The TASIM project is designed to connect 20 countries, and its realization will help to address the information gap between Western Europe and the Pacific Basin.
