The process of electing a candidate to the position of head the Council of Europe office in Azerbaijan completed, the Secretariat of the Council of Europe told Trend Thursday.

The report noted that the a number of different candidates were nominated to the post. During the month, the process continued to elect candidates for the representatives of the CoE Secretary General in all member countries, in which these positions were vacant, including Azerbaijan. As a result of interviews conducted with applicants, a candidate has been identified for head of office in Azerbaijan and has been sent to the Secretary General Torbjorn Jagland. The names of the heads of offices in Azerbaijan and other Council of Europe member countries, in which positions are vacant, will be announced after a meeting of Secretary General with the permanent representatives of those countries to the Council of Europe. It is expected that information will be released in February this year at the first meeting of the CoE Committee of Ministers. The candidates will take up duties immediately after the announcement. Period of activity in the post is three years.

The Special Representative of the Secretary General of the Council of Europe in Azerbaijan, the Czech diplomat Veronika Kotek left the country late December in connection with the completion of her diplomatic mission. Kotek has continued its work in Strasbourg.
