Azerbaijan and Latvia have discussed the possible signing of an agreement on cooperation in the provision of pensions. A meeting was held with a delegation headed by State Secretary of the Latvian Welfare Ministry Ieva Jaunzeme at the Azerbaijani State Social Protection Fund today.

Chairman of the State Social Protection Fund Salim Muslimov said the recognition of pension and other social rights of Azerbaijani citizens living and working abroad is one of the areas of the state programme for the development of the pension-insurance system.

"In this regard we are working with a number of countries," Muslimov said. "We must hasten this process with the Baltic countries as there are a lot of our citizens there. We will complete the agreement signing process with Estonia in a few days. Our delegation will visit the country soon."

He said Azerbaijan has signed similar agreements with 10 countries, including Ukraine, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Kazakhstan and Turkey.

"We are actively negotiating with Estonia, Belarus and the Czech Republic," Muslimov said. "There are negotiations with other countries. There are some problems with Russia, but we will try to resolve them."

Jaunzeme said that the purpose of the meeting is to examine the variants of cooperation between the two organisations, as well as exchange the experience.
