Ukraine’s President Petro Poroshenko congratulated Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov in a phone conversation on his re-election as Turkmenistan’s president, the press service of Ukrainian president said in a message Feb. 15.
The sides discussed the ways to intensify the political dialogue between the two countries, in particular, the organization of Turkmen president’s official visit to Ukraine in 2017.
Special attention was attached to the intensification of economic cooperation. The two presidents agreed to hold soon the next meeting of the joint intergovernmental commission on economic, cultural and humanitarian cooperation.
Poroshenko and Berdimuhamedov also discussed the attraction of Ukrainian companies to implementation of infrastructure projects in Turkmenistan. The two sides also noted the importance of resuming the direct air traffic between Kyiv and Ashgabat.
Turkmenistan is an important trade and economic partner of Ukraine in Central Asia.
According to the Ukrainian side, trade turnover between Ukraine and Turkmenistan amounted to $143.64 million in 2016.
