Baku, Azerbaijan, Sept. 8

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Selling additives, including octane boosters, at Iranian gas stations was banned.

Ali Seyed Momeni, head of the products engineering department at the National Iranian Oil Products Distribution Company, said that gasoline sold at gas stations is a complete fuel, having high octane and standardized quality, Iran's Mehr news agency reported Sept. 8.

"Not only do additives not help boost octane, they also damage engines. So, the use of additives is not recommended," he said.

Meanwhile, the National Standards Organization has not approved the use of octane boosters, he noted.

Saeed Mahjoubi, an official at the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company said in May that Iran has banned import of methylcyclopentadienyl manganese tricarbonyl (MMT), an octane-booster, from China.

"Adding this octane-booster has been banned in refineries," he added.

He told also that a refinery in Shiraz had recently imported an installation of MMT from a Chinese producer; however he said that the refinery was not permitted to do so.

Mahjoub added that all refineries across the country were banned from adding the component, known as a famous carcinogenic component, to the gasoline.
