Baku, Azerbaijan, July 26
By Khalid Kazimov – Trend:
Iranian government has called on judiciary to punish those who stormed the Saudi embassy in Tehran earlier this year.
“The invaders of the Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran must be punished,” IRNA quoted Iranian government spokesman, Mohammad Baqer Nobakht, as saying at a press conference in Tehran.
Some 21 individuals, accused of early January raid on Saudi embassy, stood a trial on July 18 in Tehran.
The defendants have been charged with "disturbing the public order and damaging embassy buildings".
The suspects appeared in the court weeks after President Hassan Rouhani’s late June call for judiciary action on those who stormed the Saudi diplomatic missions.
After execution of prominent Shia cleric, Nimr al-Nimr, by the Saudis on Jan. 2 angry Iranian protesters stormed a Saudi embassy in Tehran and a consulate in Mashhad.
Right after the attacks on its diplomatic missions, Saudi Arabia said it severed ties with the Islamic Republic.
