Iran and the U.S. can cooperate against the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) group in Iraq, Mohammad Sadr, an adviser to Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif says.

The fight against the ISIL is not limited to only military aspects, Sadr said adding serious ideological and cultural struggles also should be launched, Iran's Shargh newspaper reported Aug. 11.

From this aspect the U.S. needs Iran's help as well as assistance from clerics of the Sunni faith, Sadr underlined.

The threat of terrorism in the Middle East is spreading to the Europe as well, he stressed.

Sadr went on to add that "if Americans wish to act wisely, they should step towards cooperation with the Muslim world."

Earlier in June Iranian president Hasssan Rouhani said that Iran can cooperate with the U.S. on restoring security to Iraq if it saw Washington confronting "terrorist groups in Iraq and elsewhere," however the Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei opposed the U.S. possible military intervene in Iraq.

The U.S. has conducted two waves of air attacks on the ISIL artillery positions near Erbil, the capital of Iraq's autonomous Kurdish region.
