Canada's Prime Minister Stephen Harper landed in Israel on Sunday on his first official visit there since taking office in 2006, dpa reported.

Harper and his entourage were greeted at the airport by Israeli Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, after which he and his wife attended a welcoming ceremony in Jerusalem with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his wife.

Netanyahu called Harper a "true friend."

Harper leads a 200-strong delegation that includes cabinet ministers, parliament members and business people, for a seven-day visit to Israel, the West Bank and Jordan.

On Monday, Harper is set to become the first Canadian prime minister to address the Knesset. He will also go to the West Bank for talks with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas.

He is scheduled to travel to Jordan on Wednesday.
