Georgia, Tbilisi, Oct. 4 / Trend N.Kirtzkhalia /

Georgian Minister for Refugees and Accommodation David Darakhvelidze met with the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Antonio Gutierrez, the Ministry told Trend on Friday.

The sides discussed the situation of refugees, displaced persons and other beneficiaries, as well as the existing problems in this area and their solutions.

According to Darakhvelidze, all the prerequisites exist in Georgia for solving the problems of refugees such as legislation conforming to international standards being created and the country cooperates intensely with international organisations.

"Only financial assistance from donor organisations is needed after which all problems will be solved effectively," the minister said.

Darakhvelidze also stressed the government's approach to the issue of settlement of the military conflict, stressing that peaceful measures will be taken in this direction.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Minister for Refugees and Accommodation Nino Chavchavadze, a spokesperson for the UN High Commissioner for Refugees Simone Walken, Permanent Representative of Georgia to the UN Commission Shalva Tsikarishvili and Deputy Head of the Department of Public and International Relations of the Ministry Medea Gugeshashvili.

Large scale military action was launched in South Ossetia on August 8, 2008. Later, Russian troops occupied Tskhinvali and expelled the Georgian military.

Russia recognised the independence of South Ossetia and Abkhazia in late August. In response, Tbilisi ended diplomatic relations with Moscow and has called the two unrecognised republics of Abkhazia and South Ossetia occupied territories.
