There were no reports of damage or injury. US media reported that residents near the Gulf of California were woken up by the quake, which struck off the Baja peninsula at 00:15 local time (07:15 GMT), dpa reported.

A magnitude-6.4 quake had rocked western Mexico Wednesday evening. That quake had an epicentre 50 kilometres southwest of La Mira in the western state of Michoacan. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage.

The earthquake was felt as far as Mexico City, 384 kilometres away. In recent days, Mexico has been shaken by more than 300 aftershocks from a March 20 earthquake with a magnitude of 7.4.
