Georgia's participation in NATO's Afghan operation is evidence of the country's commitment to democratic ideals, Secretary General Anders Fogh Rasmussen said today in Tbilisi at a meeting in the Georgian Defense Ministry.

He addressed a company of the Georgian military which had served in Afghanistan.

Rasmussen offered condolences for the death of four Georgian soldiers in Afghanistan, saying that "the Alliance appreciates the selflessness of the Georgian military."

"The Georgian military along with the Americans serve in the toughest region of Afghanistan - the Helmand Province, and the NATO leadership appreciates their courage and selflessness," he said.

Rasmussen underlined that NATO and its partners are making every effort for the successful resolution of the mission, after which the Afghan people can solve their problems and run their country.
