The rule of law and an effective and accountable criminal justice system are fundamental to a well functioning modern democracy, said Ambassador Arsim Zekolli, the Head of the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat.

Ashgabat held a roundtable Organized by the OSCE Centre in Ashgabat and the OSCE Strategic Police Matters Unit (SPMU) in close co-operation with the Police Academy under the Interior Ministry was attended by officials from the Interior Ministry and Police Academy of Turkmenistan.

The two-day event aimed to familiarize representatives of Turkmenistan with best practices and lessons learnt in the field of police training in other OSCE participating States

|Good policing serving the people rather than just the state authorities is central to protecting life and property, detecting crime and preserving public order," Zekolli said.

International experts from the Czech Republic, Hungary, Turkey and Ukraine discussed different models and ways of managing and delivering police education courses and training programmes, as well as selecting and recruiting police staff.

The day before in the State Security Council the Turkmen President Gurbanguly Berdimuhammadov, who is also Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, said that the country will increase requirements for heads and staff of military and law enforcement agencies "to further enhance their level of professionalism, including strict observance of lawfulness, strengthening discipline among military personnel. "
