Mehriban Aliyeva: First European Games in Azerbaijan to become start of new era in European sports movement (PHOTO)

On October 28, the second session of the Coordinating Committee of the European Games to be held in 2015 in Baku took place, the Azerbaijani First Lady's website reported today.

Azerbaijan's First Lady, Chairperson of the European Games' Organizing Committee Mehriban Aliyeva participated in the session.

Chairing the session, Mehriban Aliyeva said these Games mean trust, serious commitment and new opportunity for Azerbaijan.

"Today Azerbaijan is known as a country of sport, and holding of respected competitions has become a tradition here," she said.

"European and world championships are held regularly in Azerbaijan. Both our guests and experts confirm that these events being held at the highest level. The First European Games to be held in Azerbaijan will become the start of a new era in sports movement, and Azerbaijan will be a country to write the first page of this history," she said.

"I would like to once more underline that the people of Azerbaijan highly appreciate these games and realize country's responsibility for these games that will play a great part in the history of the European sport. At the same time, the Government of Azerbaijan has been providing all types of support to these games and is doing everything possible to make sure that they are held successfully and that European athletes could perform at the highest level," Mehriban Aliyeva noted.

She emphasized a number of achievements reached since the First session of the European Games' Coordinating Committee.

The Chairperson of the Organizing Committee noted that the schedule of the sports competitions has already been drafted, and the number of officials, athletes to participate in the games, as well as days, on which the games will be held, have been reviewed.

"The list of places, where the sporting events will be organized, has been compiled and financial matters analyzed," she said.

In her speech, Mehriban Aliyeva also talked about the works done in the Olympic Village, and said that the place to construct a media village has been determined, the preliminary version of the European Olympic Games' official site created, the communication strategy worked out, and an agreement has been reached on broadcasting of the Games.

Saying that the level of preparation of Baku for the games was of vital importance, Mehriban Aliyeva brought to attention that today projects associated with the Azerbaijani capital's development are implemented, a new airport is being built, and recreation establishments and parks are being laid out.

Mehriban Aliyeva noted that ensuring close cooperation between all concerned entities during the time left was important, and expressed confidence that the European Games will be held at a high level.

Taking the floor afterwards, President of the European Olympic Committee Patrick Hickey highly appreciated the works done under Mehriban Aliyeva's leadership, and also talked of the forthcoming tasks.
