BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 15. Russia, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan are working together to address pollution in the Caspian Sea, said Russian Prosecutor General Igor Krasnov, Trend reports.

Speaking at a high-level session titled "Mobilization of Law Enforcement Agencies in Combating Climate Change" during COP29 in Baku, Krasnov explained the process.

"Together with colleagues from Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, and Turkmenistan, we are jointly addressing issues such as the drying up and pollution of the Caspian Sea, as well as combating crime in this area," he said.

The Prosecutor General also highlighted that similar cross-border environmental protection programs are being implemented by Russia in cooperation with the prosecutors' offices in China and Mongolia.

"Along with the rational use of natural resources, Russia is also taking measures to adapt to climate change and mitigate human impact," Krasnov emphasized.

He went on to say that Russia's prosecutor's office puts the brakes on as many as 300,000 environmental law violations each year.

The 29th session of the Conference of the Parties to the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP29), which will run until November 22, opened at the Baku Olympic Stadium on November 11.

The UN Framework Convention on Climate Change is an agreement signed at the Rio Earth Summit in June 1992 to prevent dangerous human interference in the climate system. The acronym COP (Conference of Parties) stands for “Conference of Parties” and is the highest legislative body overseeing the implementation of the Framework Convention on Climate Change.

A total of 198 countries are parties to the Convention. Unless otherwise decided by the parties, COP is held annually. The first COP event was held in March 1995 in Berlin, and its secretariat is located in Bonn.
