BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 19. COP29 represents an opportunity to advance the global climate agenda, but it also requires a clear and actionable to-do list for positive change, said Miriam Dalli, Malta’s Minister for the Environment, Energy, and Regeneration, Trend reports.
At the COP29 summit in Baku, Miriam Dalli emphasized the need for robust nationally determined contributions (NDCs) that are aligned with the global goal of limiting warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius. "Our NDCs must be fit for purpose to keep the 1.5-degree goal within reach," she stated. "The link between robust mitigation and effective adaptation is inseparable," she added, stressing that adaptation plans must be integrated into mitigation strategies to ensure that nations are both prepared for and resilient to the challenges posed by climate change.
The minister also underscored the importance of ensuring a climate-neutral and resilient global future, emphasizing the need for an ambitious and achievable agreement on the new collective quantified goal (NCQG) on climate finance. "We must ensure a climate-neutral and resilient global future for our people and the planet," Dalli said, calling for a broad and inclusive donor base that reflects the changing landscape of greenhouse gas contributions. "Malta calls for a wide donor base that reflects the evolution of greenhouse gas contributions".
Highlighting the critical role of private investment, the minister stressed that scaling up climate finance requires a multi-layered approach, one that prioritizes the most vulnerable nations, including small island states and least developed countries. "Private investment is crucial to scale up the finance required for the green transition," she remarked, before emphasizing Malta's commitment to supporting these vulnerable nations. "Malta supports a multi-layered model where the NCQG is primarily accessible to the most vulnerable," she added.
Dalli stressed the importance of synergy and transparency in implementing climate policies domestically. "Our achievements during COP29 must translate into qualitative, equitable, and inclusive green transition back at home," she said.
"Every single step is pivotal to reach the desired destination, and it is up to us to transform COP29 into a milestone on the pathway to climate neutrality, an aim which is essential to guarantee global peace and security," she concluded.
