BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 19. It is necessary to strengthen global action to combat climate change, Eritrea's Minister of Land, Water and Environment Tesfai Sebhatu said in his national statement at the COP29 summit in Azerbaijan's Baku, Trend reports.
“Decades have passed since the international community put the life-threatening triple planetary crisis at the center of its agenda and started looking for effective solutions. Regular and extraordinary summits, participation of heads of state, environmental scientists, negotiation experts, influential social activists, businessmen and innovators in the field of technology became necessary for this purpose,” the minister said.
Sebhatu highlighted that numerous strategic documents featuring actionable recommendations and transformative resolutions have been successfully adopted to enhance global collaboration and synergize efforts aimed at safeguarding our planet. These transformative initiatives encompass a strategic call to elevate ambition for climate action, amplify research and development, foster technology transfer, and catalyze funding to empower vulnerable nations.
According to him, the steps taken to reduce emissions, which are the main sources of climate change, remain far from the goals of the Paris Agreement and scientific advice.
In addition, he noted that mobilizing climate finance remains a major challenge, especially for funds needed for adaptation.
"We convene today at COP29 in Baku with memories of recent climate disasters that have claimed the lives of thousands of people and destroyed their livelihoods. Record concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere and rising global average temperatures have also been recorded this year. Unfortunately, the projected global climate action plans for 2030 are likely to fall short of the necessary targets," Tesfai Sebhatu emphasized.
