Iran's Hengam oilfield in the Persian Gulf officially started production on Tuesday.

The Islamic Republic of Iran News Network quoted the Head of Iranian Offshore Oil Company (IOOC) Mahmud Zirakchianzadeh as saying that the oilfield began trial production in April with 4,000 barrels per day production capacity," Zirakchianzadeh said on Monday.

"The current production of Hengam oilfield is 7,000 bpd," he explained.

Zirakchianzadeh added the oilfield was developed by Iranian contractors in less than 18 months.

Hengam oilfield, which was discovered in 1975, contains almost 600 million barrels and is located between Iran and Oman in the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran shares 18 oil and gas fields with neighboring countries, including Oman, in the strategic oil-rich region of the Persian Gulf.

Iran is OPEC's second-largest producer after Saudi Arabia. In 2009, Iran's crude production stood approximately at 3.8 million bpd.
