Iran will start exporting its domestically-made locomotives in the near future, showing that the country has reached self-sufficiency in this field, ILNA quoted the First Vice-President Mohammad-Reza Rahimi as saying.

He made the remarks on the sidelines of a ceremony for unveiling the first 10 Iranian-made locomotives.

The manufacturing plant has the annual production capacity of 80 locomotives, he said, adding that 30 locomotives can be exported.

Previously, the Islamic Republic of Iran Railways managing director Abdolali Saheb-Mohammadi said that the first Iranian-made locomotive will be used in the national rail transportation fleet in the current year.

Currently, many locomotive parts are produced and wagons are revamped inside the country, he noted.

In March 2011, Iran unveiled a locomotive which runs on a domestically-made heavy diesel engine.

In July, Saheb-Mohammadi said that some 420 kilometers of railroad will be built by the end of the Iranian year (March 20, 2013).

Some 25.000 kilometers of railway is in operation across the country, he added.
