Chinese construction giant to work on Samarkand's master plan

China Construction Engineering Design Group Corporation will participate in development of the master plan for Uzbekistan’s Samarkand as a part of construction of facilities for the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) 2022 Summit and creation of the Samarkand City tourism zone, Uzbek media reported on Aug. 8.

The corresponding agreement has been signed in Beijing between the National Bank of Uzbekistan (NBU) and the Chinese company.

A group of designers led by the company's vice president, chief planner, national registered town planner, Prof. Song Xiaolong will take part in development of the master plan.

In June 2018, on the eve of the SCO summit, the NBU and the Chinese Silk Road Foundation signed a memorandum of understanding on joint implementation of the Samarkand City project aimed at improving the tourism potential of Samarkand, the world famous historical and cultural center and the “Pearl on the Silk Road of the 21st Century”.

China Construction Engineering Design Group Corporation is a leading architectural and design company of China. In 2017, the company took the second place among the design bureaus of the country, with a total income exceeding $1.58 billion.

The founder of the company is China State Construction Engineering Corporation Ltd. (CSCECL), which is the largest construction corporation in the world. The market value of CSCECL as of June 2018 was $40.4 billion, the number of employees – 270,500 people.

It was earlier reported that Uzbekistan may establish import of machinery and electronic equipment from China within a program on development of family entrepreneurship.

In 1H2018, China took the second place in the list of the main foreign trade partners of Uzbekistan (with a small difference from Russia): trade turnover between the countries amounted to $2.81 billion, which is 15.9 percent of the total foreign trade turnover of Uzbekistan.
