New Istanbul Airport served about 10M passengers since early 2019

In January-May 2019, the new airport in Istanbul served 9.9 million passengers, Trend reports referring to Turkey's Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure.

According to the Ministry, 2.5 million passengers were served by domestic flights, and 7.4 million passengers by international flights.

The Ministry noted that during the reported period, 65,666 flights were operated at the new Istanbul airport, 17,214 of which were domestic, while 48,452 were international.

In January-May 2019, the volume of freight at the new Istanbul airport amounted to 105,246 tons, of which 15,644 tons fall to domestic flights, and 89,602 tons account for international ones.

The opening ceremony of the new airport, which was attended by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Minister of Transport and Infrastructure Mehmet Cahit Turhan, took place in Istanbul on October 29, 2018.

The third airport of Istanbul was built in the vicinity of Lake Terkos, located in the northern part of the city.
