BAKU, Azerbaijan, November 27. This week it was announced that the container freight shipping from Kazakhstan to Europe through Azerbaijan and vice versa increased by 2.3 times - to 13,828 containers from January through October 2022, Trend reports.

Out of the total volume, 9,292 containers are 20-foot containers, 4,505 are 40-foot containers, and 13 containers are 45-foot containers. Transit cargo transportation by air has also increased significantly over the past few months.

Moreover, Azerbaijan aims to develop regional communications and intends to implement a number of projects in the transport and logistics sector. Supplies through the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline are expected to increase to five million tons.

Cargo transportation along the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway increased by 26.2 percent (112,000 tons) from January through October 2022 compared to the same period of 2021, and totaled 540,00 tons.

Rail freight transport between Azerbaijan and Kazakhstan from January through October 2022 totaled 950,000 tons (eight-fold growth), out of which transit traffic made up 96 percent. Cargo transportation in the direction of Kazakhstan grew eight times, from 125,000 to 950,000 tons. It is expected that this figure is going to rise by 9–10 times by the end of 2022.

Furthermore, it was noted that the Zangazur Corridor may increase the transit potential of Azerbaijan, since it is shorter and has more profitable access to Europe. The construction work of the Goradiz-Agbend railway with a total length of 110.4 kilometers has been completed by 38 percent to date, and the design - by 78 percent. In regard with the 47.1 kilometers long Barda-Aghdam railway, 90 percent of the design work and 58 percent of the construction work have been completed. These projects are expected to be fully completed in 2023–2024.
