By Elnur Baghishov – Trend:

The prices of energy carriers such as petrol will not rise in Iran during the current period, Mohammad Khaledi Sardashti, member of the Iranian Parliament Committee on Energy, told IRNA, Trend reports.

Due to the economic situation and high inflation, it is impossible to sell energy carriers at free prices, according to Khaledi Sardashti. In his words, the Energy Committee holds various discussions on the prices of energy carriers, whereas draft bill on the allocation of fuel to each citizen was rejected by members of the Committee.

"With this in view, the prices of energy carriers including petrol have to be adjusted in Iran, as this step will help to reduce its consumption," he said. Khaledi Sardashti added that adjusting the prices of energy carriers will also help to prevent the illicit export of fuel thus, allowing the government to legally regulate the exports.

"As long as the gas and petrol price are equal, the consumption of the latter will remain high," he said.

In Iran, the price of petrol is 10,000 rials (approx. $0.23) per liter at filling stations and there are no restrictions on the amount of petrol to be sold.
