The United Nations envoy to Yemen, who helped brokered a power transfer deal in the country, Sunday visited the southern city of Taiz, recently gripped by clashes between forces loyal to outgoing President Ali Abdullah Saleh and armed rivals, DPA reported.

Jamal Benomar separately met with the governor of Taiz Hamoud al-Sufi, and families of people killed in attacks blamed on the elite Republican Gurads led by Saleh's son.

Taiz, Yemen's second biggest city, has been a focal point of the protests against Saleh's rule since they began in February.

Prior to the envoy's arrival, activists gathered documents on alleged crimes by Saleh's forces against pro-democracy protesters to give to him, said opposition sources.

Benomar's visit comes a day after Yemen's acting president Abd Rabbo Mansour Hadi swore in a new interim government led by the opposition leader Mohammed Basindwa.

Under the power transfer deal signed in Saudi Arabia last month, Saleh, who has ruled Yemen for 33 years, has to step down in return for immunity from prosecution.
