(dpa) - Eight workers were killed when the earth caved in while they were digging a canal in India's southern state of Andhra Pradesh, police said Sunday.

A police spokesman said that six others were injured in the incident on Saturday evening in the Karimnagar district, some 225 kilometres north of state capital Hyderabad.

"The victims, seven of them women, were digging a canal under a national project when the earth on one side caved in. All of them died on the spot," local police officer Syed Sajid said.

The police said while one worker was discharged after first-aid, five others were still admitted at private nursing home in a neighbouring village.
