EU to deploy election observers in Afghanistan

European Union (EU) would send some 100 observers to monitor the upcoming Afghan presidential election, spokesman of Independent Election Commission (IEC) Noor Mohammad Noor said Thursday, Xinhua reported.

"In line with agreement, EU would deploy around 100 observers to monitor the electoral and voting process in Afghanistan," Noor told newsmen here.

Noor said that some 250,000 national and international observers would monitor the electoral process in the second Presidential polls since the fall of Taliban regime in 2001.

Afghanistan's second presidential election in the post-Taliban country is going to be held on Aug. 20 amid tight security, during which some 17 million Afghans eligible to vote would use their franchise.

Forty one candidates including the sitting president Hamid Karzai are on the run to secure the country's highest executive post.
