Baku, Azerbaijan, Aug.8

By Fatih Karimov - Trend: Iran Roads Maintenance Organization has revamped the national roads network to be ready for the second wave of summer travels after the holy month of Ramadan.

Davood Keshavarzian, head of Iran Roads Maintenance Organization, said some 3,000 kilometers of roads have been asphalted since the beginning of the current year, Iran's Fars news agency reported on August 8.

Road line markings should be regularly repainted. Also, guard rails and traffic signs should be repaired or replaced at accident-prone places, he said.

Some 75,000 tons of asphalt is used per day to improve the quality of roads, he noted.

Iranian Transport and Urban Development Minister Abbas Akhoundi said on June 27 that the country needs $2.5 billion annually for roads maintenance.

The national roads network is measured at around 200,000 kilometers, he added.

The administration in cooperation with the parliament will implement plans to repair and renovate roads across the country, he added.

USD exchange rate is currently about 31,000 rials in Iran.

Iranian Traffic Police Chief Eskandar Momeni has said that Iranians took 62,162,000 trips during the Eid al-Fitr holidays on July 29-30.

More trips were taken than during the Noruz (Iranian New Year) holidays, Momeni told reporters.

He added that cameras on highways showed that one third of the visits were to the provinces of Gilan, Alborz, and Mazandaran.
