An earthquake measuring five on the Richter scale jolted Bojnourd City in North Khorasan Province of Iran.
According to Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor occurred at 03:26 local time (GMT+4:30), Mehr news agency reported.
The report did not provide further details on the possible destructions or casualties.
Iran sits astride several major faults in the earth's crust, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.
