By Tamilla Mammadova - Trend:

Georgia is currently building 140 kilometers of new large highways, of which a total of 70 km roads will be opened by the end of 2020, said Georgian Prime Minister Giorgi Gakharia, Trend reports citing Georgian media.

Two lanes on the Kutaisi bypass road, as well as Khashuri bypass road and Japana-Lanchkhuti section of Samtredia-Grigoleti road, will be constructed, Gakharia said.

"Currently, the construction of roads of Rikoti pass and Grigoleti-Kobuleti and Batumi bypasses are underway," Gakharia said adding that two new lanes on the 19-kilometer section of the Kutaisi bypass road have been commissioned.

The prime minister noted that the construction of the remaining 22.3 km section of the road will be completed by the end of 2020, after which the Kutaisi bypass road will become four-lane.

Gakharia said that in a week, one more section of the Samtredia-Grigoleti road will open, while the Khashuri bypass road will open by autumn.

He added that last year, a record 804-km of roads were repaired in the country.

To improve traffic safety and road infrastructure, the Georgian government has provided about 200.2 million lari ($65.7 million) for the construction of two new lanes of the Kutaisi bypass road from the state budget.
