Iran and Oman have called for the expansion of bilateral economic ties at the 13th meeting of the Iran-Oman Joint Commission on Economic Cooperation in Muscat, Press TV reported.

The meeting was held on Monday, following two days of intense deliberations by the two countries' experts, during which the required documents and plans were drawn up, according to a statement issued by the Iranian Foreign Ministry.

Iranian Foreign Minister Manouchehr Mottaki gave an address at the meeting in which he pointed to the amicable ties between the two countries and highlighted their potential to expand bilateral relations in various economic spheres, especially tourism, mining, and joint ventures.

Mottaki also stated that Iran is an essential link for the transit of goods between Central Asia and Oman.

Omani Commerce and Industry Minister Maqbool bin Ali Sultan also gave a speech at the meeting in which he described the two countries' economic relations over the past five years as "positive" and predicted that the there would be quantitative and qualitative growth in the level of these ties in 2010.

Sultan hailed the two countries' regional cooperation in various areas, such as the oil sector, power plants, transportation, and the transit of goods, and said the study phase for a plan to increase cooperation in shipping should be inaugurated.
