Turkey's Izmir port will be connected by rail to the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars (BTK) railway, a source in the Ministry of Transport and Infrastructure of Turkey told Trend on Nov. 22.

The project is currently under development, the source said

The source noted that the connection of the Izmir port to BTK will contribute to the growth of cargo transportation in Turkey.

A solemn ceremony was held on Oct. 30, 2017 at the Baku International Sea Trade Port in order to mark the opening of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway. The total length of BTK is 826 kilometers.

The BTK railway was built on the basis of the Azerbaijan-Georgia-Turkey interstate agreement.
