Azerbaijan increases volume of int'l cargo transportation

Some 17.1 million tons of cargo were transported in Azerbaijan in January 2019, which is 2.1 percent more than in January 2018, Trend reports referring the Azerbaijani State Statistical Committee.

Of the total volume of goods transported in January 2019, 58 percent of goods were transported by vehicles, 32 percent - by pipelines, 6.8 percent - by railway, 3.1 percent - by ships and 0.1 percent - by planes.

Some 145.5 million people were carried by passenger transport in January 2019, which is 1.2 percent more than in the month of 2018. The majority (87 percent) of the passengers were transported by vehicles, 12.8 percent - by metro, and the remainder - by other types of transport.

Some 1.2 million tons of cargo were carried by railway in January 2019, which is 9.3 percent more than in January 2018.

On average, the number of loaded railcars amounted to 268, unloaded - 391 per day. The average daily load of railcars in the northern direction of the railway amounted to 10,200 tons, in the western direction – 3,900 tons, in the southern direction – 400 tons.

Some 524,500 tons of cargo were transported by ships during the reporting period, which is 23.3 percent less than in January 2018. Some 34.1 percent of the transported cargo fell on oil cargo. The volume of cargo handled in the ports of Azerbaijan in January 2019 amounted to 727,800 tons.

Some 9.9 million tons of cargo were transported by vehicles during the reporting period, which exceeds the same figure in 2018 by 2 percent.

The volume of passenger transportation by vehicles for the reporting period amounted to 126.5 million people (an increase of 1.4 percent compared to January 2018). Some 96.4 percent of the passengers were transported by buses, 3.6 percent - by motor vehicles.

The volume of passenger traffic by metro amounted to 18.6 million people, a decrease of 0.2 percent compared to the same period in 2018.

Some 163,200 passengers were transported by planes in the first month of 2019, which is 3.8 percent less than in January 2018. Thus, 0.1 percent of transportation by this mode of transport fell on the private sector. Cargo transportation by planes increased by 7.1 percent and amounted to 18,000 tons for the year.
