Iran's copper reserves reach more than 1 billion tons

Iran's copper reserves were estimated at more than 1 billion tons over the past year after new reserves were revealed, Reza Sharifi, Executive Director of the Sunqun Copper Complex in Iran’s western East Azerbaijan Province, said.

Sharifi made the remark at the event dedicated to the projects of increasing copper production in the complex, Trend reports referring to the website of the Iranian Ministry of Industry, Mine and Trade.

“As result of new exploration operations, 340 more million tons of copper were revealed,” the executive director added.

Sharifi added that the territory of Sunqun Copper Complex covers over 5 million square meters.

The executive director said that as a result of new exploration operations, the phases 4, 5 and 6 are planned to be commissioned in the complex.

Sharifi said that 4,210 people are currently working in the complex. Over the past year, more than 500 people were employed.

The new central office of the Sunqun Copper Complex was commissioned on Dec. 21 in the Varzaqan county of Iran’s East Azerbaijan province. Iranian Minister of Industry, Mine and Trade Reza Rahmani attended the ceremony.

About 300 billion rials (about $7.1 million) have been spent on the construction of this central office.
