SOCAR (State Oil Company of Azerbaijan) has started expanding the first exploration well to lay the casing at a depth of 2,600 meters on the Umid prospective gas condensate structure, a source in SOCAR said.

The company has drilled 2,600 meters and began to extend the hole for laying the casing, the source said.

Although the drilling of the exploration well was launched in August, the company works quite rapidly. According to the source, the drilling would not be difficult to a depth of 3,500-4,000 meters. "The drilling will proceed more difficult in deeper places," the source said noting that this plot is differentiates for its complex tectonics and geology.

The field is very promising and SOCAR holds high expectations on exploratory drilling, the source added.

This is the first exploration drilling the company has implemented independently for the past 15 years. The gas reserves expected from the Umid field are estimated at 300 billion cubic meters and the gas condensate reserves expected are estimated at 30-40 million tons.

Earlier, SOCAR completed constructing the Umid-1 platform. The Umid-1 platform was built on the base of the unfinished Chiraq-6 platform, the largest facility within the program. Its height is 72 meters. The platform was installed in the 15 kilometers of the Bulla Deniz field at a depth of 58 meters. A total of six gas wells are expected to be drilled from the platform.
