Director of Exploration at National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC), Saleh Hendi has announced there is a possibility of hydrocarbon reservoirs in Bostanabad and Mianeh regions in East Azerbaijan Province.

"The primary research indicates the possibility of hydrocarbon reservoirs existence in two regions of Bostanabad and Mianeh in East Azerbaijan Province. Iran is to start further operational research in these regions,” Trend reports via Fars News Agency.

Hendi noted the explorations of 13 reservoirs during President Rouhani’s term.

“Around 35 to 40 reservoirs have also been explored that are not developed so far," he said.

"Exploration of more reservoirs has been planned for the next year (begin on March 21, 2019), that would be announced if the Oil Ministry allows it", he said.

The official indicated that 60 percent of the country is under exploration research.

"Currently the priority is drilling exploratory wells in the Persian Gulf , South West and North East of Iran," he said.

"Iran does not look for new oil reservoirs in border regions until there is little distance between exploration and development stage, because when we announce the existence of these reservoirs the neighbors rush to extract them like the Azar Oil Field," he added.
