Iranian MP on fuel price hike: Consultations could've provided better option

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 21

By Elnur Baghishov - Trend:

If the consultations related to an increase in fuel price had been held in the Iranian parliament, a better model could be offered, Deputy Chairman of the Plan, Budget and Audit Committee of the Iranian parliament Hadi Qavami said, Trend reports referring to Fars news agency.

Qavami added that the reform program related to gasoline price should have been created for these individuals to be able to buy 60 liters of gasoline through quota at 10,000 rials (about 0.23 cents) and additional 20 liters at 20,000 rials (about 0.47 cents).

"Moreover, the price of a liter of gasoline must start from 30,000 rials (about 0.72 cents) for the individuals having cars worth more than 1.5 billion rials (about $35,700),” Qavami said. "Meanwhile, the price of a liter of gasoline must start from 100,000 rials (about $2.38) for the individuals having cars worth more than 20 billion rials (about $476,000)”.

“Presently, Iran consumes about 35 billion liters of gasoline a year,” Qavami said. “In the coming year, this consumption will reach 40 billion.”

The deputy chairman said that after the price increase, the demand will drop by about three billion liters.

“As a result of an increase in price of one liter of gasoline by 5,000 rials (about 0.11 cents), the revenues worth 85 trillion rials (about $2.02 billion) will be obtained,” Qavami said.

The deputy chairman said that 15 billion liters of gasoline will be sold at 30,000 rials. As a result, the revenues worth 300 trillion rials (about $7.1 billion) will be obtained.

Qavami said that 385 trillion rials (about $9.1 billion) must be paid to 60 million Iranians a year and this process must be fully controlled.

Under the new fuel regulations, each driver is allowed to buy 60 liters of petrol a month at 15,000 rials (35 cent) a liter. Each additional liter costs 30,000 rials (71 cent).

The revenues to be obtained as a result of an increase in gasoline price will be paid by the Iranian government to 60 million Iranians a month.
