Kazakhstan looking to double renewables share in electricity production

BAKU, Azerbaijan, Nov. 24

By Nargiz Sadikhova - Trend:

Three percent of the electricity produced in Kazakhstan accounts for renewable energy sources, Kazakhstan's Ministry of Energy Nurlan Nogayev said, Trend reports citing Central Communications Service.

Nogayev said that the share of renewables in electricity production should be increased to 10 percent by 2030, and to 50 percent by 2020. He noted that currently 110 renewable energy facilities operate across the country the capacity of which is over 1,500 MW.

"Kazakhstan's president said that country's economic growth should be promoted in conditions of a 'green' economy in the medium term. Taking this into consideration, the ministry is carrying out intensive work. Four more renewable energy facilities the capacity of which will be 165 MW are to be commissioned before the end of 2020. Currently, 404 MW of electricity are being produced from wind farms, 891 Mw from solar farms, 224 MW from hydroelectric stations, 7.82 MW from bioenergy stations," Nogayev said.

Nogayev added that recently the plans for hydroelectricity sector development were approved by the country's government. In the nearest future, the projects for the construction of 13 hydroelectric stations, 34 wind farms, and 12 solar farms will be implemented country-wide. Thus, renewable energy capacities will be increased to 3,000 MW by 2025.
