Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Discusses    Iran’s Opportunities for Joining BTC

Azerbaijan, Baku / corr TrendCapita I Alizade / Khazar Ibrahim, the Spokesman for the Azerbaijani Foreign Ministry, stated on 22 June that Azerbaijani Foreign Minister Elmar Mammadyarov discussed Iran's opportunities for joining the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan main export pipeline during a meeting with his Iranian counterpart in Tehran.

Currently, the BTC delivers light oil produced from the Azeri-Chirag-Gunsheli oilfields in the Azerbaijani section of the Caspian Sea. Oil is transported to the Turkish port of Ceyhan. He noted that the parties paid special attention to the expansion of bilateral relations and discussed several projects.

The two Foreign Ministers discussed prospects for cooperation in the transport sector. "Particularly, they exchanged opinions on gas transportation from Central Asia to Azerbaijan via Iran, regarding transport corridors North-South, Nakhchivan-Bilasuvar, Julfa-Julfa and Astara -Astara," Ibrahim added.

The Iranian Foreign Minister stressed his support in resolving the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict within the framework of Azerbaijan's territorial integrity.

Mammadyarov also participated in a meeting consisting of the Foreign Minister of five Caspian littoral countries - Azerbaijan, Russia, Turkmenistan, Iran, and Kazakhstan, held in Tehran.
