Cashless payment gaining popularity in Azerbaijan

The number of payment cards in circulation in Azerbaijan increased by 24.4 percent in the first quarter of 2021, compared to the same period of 2020, reaching 9.77 million units, Trend reports citing a statistical report of the Central Bank of Azerbaijan (CBA).

According to the CBA, most of the cards (8.62 million units) are debit cards, of which 3.46 million units are social cards, 2.6 million - are salary cards, 2.57 million - are other card products. The number of debit cards increased by 24.5 percent on annual basis.

The number of credit cards as of late March 2021 exceeded 1.14 million units, the CBA report reads.

“By late March, 2,763 ATMs operated in Azerbaijan, of which 1,451 were in Baku. The remaining 1,312 ATMs were in other cities and districts of the country. The number of ATMs in the country increased by 3.2 percent year on year,” said the report.

The number of POS terminals in the country amounted to 58,184, of which 38,421 were installed in Baku, 19,763 - in other cities and districts of Azerbaijan. Their number decreased by 12,943 units, or 18.2 percent in annual terms.
