Probably around 5,000-6,000 people in Iran have changed their sex gender in the last 10 years, said Farshid Masoudi, the chairman of the Iranian Soiciety for Support of Individuals with Gender Identity Disorder, Trend reports via "Sharq" newspaper.

According to Masoudi, no precise data is available on this issue. Global statistics also show various figures.

Masoudi added that, taking into account Iran’s population of 80 million, it is safe to assume that there are about 24,000 transsexuals in the country.

Ayatollah Khomeini, the religious leader of Iran, gave a fatwa allowing gender reassignment operations in 1981.

In line with Iran’s Family Support Act approved in 2012, one has to apply to the Family Court in order to get permission for gender change in the country.
