A senior Iranian MP has said that about eight million countrymen still do not have insurance in the country.

Hosseinali Shahriari, the head of the parliamentary commission of healthcare, has said that the government had allocated $166.6 million (550 billion tomans) to provide 11 million citizens with insurance coverage, Khabaronline news website reported.

He added that the allocated budget did not meet the expenses for covering all applicants with insurance as providing 11 million people with insurance coverage would cost $1.8 billion.

The MP further criticized the government over its failure to settle debts to insurance companies and said the government’s debt to the industry totals at $4.5 billion.
