Iran seeks to increase the share of natural gas in the fuel supply to the country’s power plants over the coming months.

Despite a growth of 10 percent in the output of the country’s power plants, the volume of liquid fuel supplied to the power plants is expected to drop by 30 percent over the current fiscal year (starting Mach 20).

Speaking about the development of active phases of Iran's South Pars gas field, the country's Oil Minister Bijan Namdar Zanganeh said that liquid fuel accounted for about 42 percent of the total fuel consumed by the power plants in 2012, local media reported.

However, the share of the consumption of liquid fuel of the power plants is expected to drop to 10 percent by the year end, he added.

Speaking about the supply of natural gas to the power plants, he added that the production of gas in the South Pars gas field has reached 570 million cubic meters per day from 280 million cubic meters in 2012.

Iran's power plants generated over 261.91 TWh (terawatt hours) of electricity between March 2017 and Jan 2018, indicating a growth of seven percent year on year.
