A former senior officer was killed and eight wounded in Mosul, capital of northern Iraq's Nineveh province, provincial police said Saturday.
Leith Abid, a former brigadier general of Iraqi army, was shot dead by gunmen Saturday near his house in 17 July neighborhood of western Mosul, some 400 km north of Baghdad, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity, Xinhua reported.

The source added that an explosion caused by an improvised explosive device (IED) wounded five people near a supermarket, and another IED attack injured two policemen and one civilian and caused damage to a police car in the south of Mosul.
Nineveh province has been the scene of almost everyday clashes and attacks targeted U.S. troops and Iraqi security forces, and was said to be one of the last strongholds of al-Qaida fighters in the war-torn country.
