Afghan forces Wednesday recovered five charred bodies, a day after a cargo plane with eight people aboard went down east of the capital Kabul, officials said, DPA reported.

Around 250 soldiers were taking part in the search operation, the Defence Ministry said in a statement. "So far five charred bodies have been recovered and the search continues," it said.

The civilian cargo plane crashed 15 kilometres east of Kabul International Airport shortly before 8 pm (1530 GMT) Tuesday after it took off from Bagram, the main US military base north of Kabul.

"The plane vanished from the radar as it was preparing to land and we believe there were some technical problems," Kabul airport chief Mohammad Yaqoub Rasouli said.

Rasouli said a villager in Tangi Puli Charkhi area reported to his office that he saw the plane going down and then catching fire.

He said the crew consisted of six Filipinos, a Kenyan and an Indian national.

NATO said in a statement that it was not one of its aircraft. "Early reports indicate the plane is an L-100 Hercules aircraft, the civilian equivalent of a military C-130."

According to the Defence Ministry, the plane was hauling supplies for the international forces in the country.

The plane was operated by the US firm National Air Cargo, which works for the US military, according to the firm's website.
