Five soldiers of the NATO-led International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) were killed by roadside bombs and an insurgent attack in Afghanistan on Thursday, the alliance said in statements, DPA reported

Three of the ISAF soldiers were killed by a roadside bomb in the western region, while a fourth died in a similar attack in a southern province. The fifth soldier was killed in an insurgent attack in the country's east.

The military did not disclose the nationalities of the deceased.

On Wednesday, six ISAF soldiers died in separate suspected Taliban attacks in the country's south and east.

A total of 585 NATO soldiers has been killed in Afghanistan so far this year, according to icasualties.org, an independent website that tracks military fatalities in Afghanistan. The figure makes 2010 the bloodiest year for NATO troops since the ouster of the Taliban regime in late 2001.

On Wednesday, the United Nations Security Council decided to extend the mandate of ISAF forces in Afghanistan for another 12 months. More than 150,000 US and NATO troops are currently based in Afghanistan.

Afghan and NATO forces killed two senior Taliban leaders, Mohammad Ali and Maulana Fatih, in separate operations in the southern province of Ghazni on Wednesday, the military said.

Also on Wednesday, several suspected Taliban fighters were killed and 10 others were detained during a joint Afghan and NATO operation in Nahr-e-Saraj district of the southern province of Helmand, ISAF said in a separate statement.

The southern region, where the Taliban are the most active, has been the main focus of the allied forces' operations this year. Thousands of Afghan and NATO troops have been taking part in a major operation in the past three months in Kandahar province, the spiritual home of the militants.
