Barack Obama was projected the winner of swing state Virginia early Wednesday, broadcaster CNN said as vote tallies showed the US president had won re-election, dpa reported.
The announcement came amid a tight race in the state, where in 2008, Obama became the first Democrat to win since 1964.
Strong support for Obama in the suburbs of the US capital, Washington, was able to push the president over rival Mitt Romney, who had led results in the state for much of the evening after Tuesday's voting.
