Armenia violates ceasefire with Azerbaijan over 130 times in 24 hours

Over the past 24 hours, Armenian armed forces 133 times broke ceasefire with Azerbaijan on various parts of the contact line between Azerbaijani and Armenian troops, the Azerbaijani Defense Ministry said Feb. 18.

Azerbaijani positions located in the villages of Qizilhajili, Qaymaqli, Qushchu Ayrim of the Qazakh district underwent fire from the villages of Berkaber of Armenia's Ijevan district, Voskepar, Barekamavan of Noyemberyan district and Aygepar of the Berd district.

Azerbaijani positions located in Alibayli village of the Tovuz district and on the nameless heights of the Gadabay district underwent fire from the positions located on the nameless heights of Armenia's Krasnoselsk district.

Azerbaijani positions also underwent fire from the positions located near the villages of Talish, Gulustan of the Goranboy district, Goyarkh, Chilaburt, Yarimja of the Terter district, Shikhlar, Novruzlu, Javahirli, Kangarli, Sarijali, Shuraabad, Yusifjanli, Merzili, Qaraqashli of the Aghdam district, Kuropatkino of the Khojavand district, Horadiz, Garakhanbeyli, Gorgan, Ashagi Seyidahmadli of the Fizuli district, Mehdili of the Jabrayil district.

Armenians also violated ceasefire from the positions located on nameless heights in the Goygol, Goranboy, Khojavand, Fizuli and Jabrayil districts.

Azerbaijani armed forces inflicted 136 strikes on enemy positions.

The conflict between the two South Caucasus countries began in 1988 when Armenia made territorial claims against Azerbaijan. As a result of the ensuing war, in 1992 Armenian armed forces occupied 20 percent of Azerbaijan, including the Nagorno-Karabakh region and seven surrounding districts.

The two countries signed a ceasefire agreement in 1994. The co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, Russia, France and the US are currently holding peace negotiations.

Armenia has not yet implemented the UN Security Council's four resolutions on withdrawal of its armed forces from the Nagorno-Karabakh and the surrounding districts.
